Discussing the Pros and Cons of distance education
The following blog will bring some of the pros and cons of different distance education technologies and how we can use these to provide a better learning experience to our students.
Hi Antonio, I like your homepage - it's very striking. You've made good use of colour and image. However, I wonder if you could tone down the background colour, particularly at the top, as it makes reading the title a bit difficult. People with disabilities such as visual impairments or dyslexia could find it difficult to read, which is a shame as it draws the reader in. I like the fact you've added some personal information about yourself. Note to self - I need to do that on mine - thanks for the reminder :) I look forward to reading more of your posts. Sue
I am a big fan of technology, and I am quite good with it, but a lot of other people are not.
I think the biggest con I find in my industry is that tradition overshadows any effort to use new technology or methodology. Because of the nature of firefighting, most instructors tend to be "salty old firefighters" who are used to their ways and reject change without even trying.
As far as pros, the list can go on and on. One of my biggest likes for use in fire and rescue training is that you can use elearning to keep the students interested. One thing students complain about is sitting in a classroom and I agree with them. Most people in this line of work are hands on learners (and they should be) . Using e learning techniques for the theory parts of the class can help that, give the students asynchronous assignments before showing up to the class, then do a quick review to make sure they understood the concepts and dive directly into practical evolutions.
As far as the background (new and improved thanks to Sue's suggestion) It was taken while we were intentionally burning a custom made 3 bedroom apartment for an arson investigation class (they have to figure out if the fire was accidental or intentional and if intentional where it originated and how). Someone had a flip cam and caught this shot of me waiting for the fire to get nice and toasty before putting it out (thus the hose facing up and not forward)

Antonio,
ReplyDeleteI love your background. What are some of the pros and cons you have learned so far in DE Technologies? :)
